A Rom-Com with Substance
Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez was a sweet, thoughtful, and a little bit spicy romance. I hesitate to call it a rom-com, despite it involving a number of the tropes, because it had more substance and less comedy than the traditional rom-com.
A Brief Summary
The novel tells of the unexpected love between upper crust doctor Alexis Montgomery and small-town carpenter Daniel Grant. Although Daniel is all in with his relationship with Alexis and despite her very real feelings towards him, Alexis is torn between him and the expectations and pressures of her family and her work.
What I Liked
The first 30% or so of this novel had me saying, “Eh, it’s alright.”
But once the ball got rolling and there was more substance with Daniel and Alexis as well as more background provided about them and the other supporting characters, I felt much more sucked into the story.
- Depth to the plot and characters
- Layered, likable protagonists and supporting characters
What I Liked Less about Part of Your World
What I liked less is primarily on content concerns.
While there weren’t any explicit sex scenes, though there was some spice.
The language wasn’t excessive, but it was certainly laced throughout the dialogue.
Also, there were some characters (that you weren’t supposed to like) that I really detested. But I guess that’s the point.
Content Note
I do feel like it’s necessary to include that domestic abuse is a central figure of this story because I know that’s very real to many people and important for them to be aware of.
In my opinion, Jimenez handled this well. She even made space for different manifestations of abuse, including emotional/psychological and physical, and she also talked a bit about enablers of abuse. I thought these stories and this topic were given the appropriate amount of weight considering the genre and brought a lot of depth to the novel.
Final Thoughts
As a whole, I liked the book but didn’t love it. Some things were really sweet and unique, and other parts just didn’t click for me. I also knock points off for language because it’s really a turn-off for me.
So, I gave this one 3.5 stars but would definitely round up if asked.
