It is no secret I am a huge Lisa T. Bergren fan; I’ve never read a book of hers I didn’t enjoy, and I jump on everything that she publishes. I recently stumbled across a series she wrote before my all-time favorite River of Time came out and gave it a go. And boy, did it not disappoint!
The Homeward Trilogy is the saga of the three St. Clair siblings as they travel west to Colorado in the 1880s. Odessa teeters on the brink of life and death from deadly consumption; Moira craves fame and glory on the stage (an occupation forbidden by her father); and restless Dominic is stuck as the unwilling guardian of his sisters and heir to the family’s publishing business. Throughout the three novels (Breathe, Sing, and Claim), we follow the St. Clairs as they fight for love, belonging, and the purpose of their lives.
In my opinion, these were classic historical, romantic fiction. Colorado in the 1800s is its own character – the beautiful mountains, expansive ranches, and unpredictable weather. And I really enjoyed immersing myself in that period of American history. It’s fairly ripe for intrigue, drama, romance, and more! The dangers of mining, frontier life, the lure and quest for gold, the consequent lawlessness and greed rampant amongst communities… It’s all right there for a great story.
Although Odessa, Moira, and Nic are in every book, each novel focuses on a different St. Clair and their personal growth, faith, and love life. All three siblings have very different journeys and things they are forced to deal with. Parts were a little predictable but often still held a twist. For example, I often guessed [blank] was going to happen, but it never unfolded precisely how I expected. There was plenty of romance (yay), lots of realistic drama, appropriate character growth, and good ole’ Western bad guys. There was an emphasis on faith, wrestling with past demons, and learning to move forward.
I very much enjoyed this series. I read all three ~400 page books in about four days. I was completely invested and hooked! It was easy to read, interesting, refreshing, and uplifting. For fans of American history, action, romance, and faith, this trilogy is for you. Bergren delivers again!
