THE GIRL IN HIS SHADOW (Audrey Blake) – Thoughtful Historical Novel

A Unique Novel with a Medical Focus

Audrey Blake’s The Girl in His Shadow pleasantly surprised me as a historical novel, turning out to be less of a traditional romance novel and unique. Set in the mid-19th century, we meet Nora Beady, the ward of eccentric but brilliant Dr. Croft. In a time when it’s illegal for women to practice medicine, Nora assists Dr. Croft in secret; but their way of life is threatened when a new doctor joins the practice.

What I Enjoyed

I enjoyed The Girl in His Shadow so much more than I expected for a number of reasons.

Well-Developed Characters

I loved the characters and felt each of them were unique and fleshed out, even the supporting characters (Mrs. Phipps was a favorite). Nora was an intelligent, strong protagonist. Dr. Croft was the epitome of a “mad scientist” but still refreshingly human, open-minded, and kind, especially to Nora. And Dr. Gibson was a character that showed a lot of realistic growth throughout the novel.

Medical Topics

There was more emphasis on medicine and science than I expected, and I actually really enjoyed it. Blake’s descriptions of procedures, ailments, and the thought processes of the time were completely exceptional, albeit a little bit grisly at times. (If you are squeamish, you may want to just skim some of those parts). I am not science-minded in the slightest but found that aspect of 1850s Britain fascinating. It was something I’d never explored, which meant I learned something new!

Natural Dialogue

I thought Blake handled dialogue well, especially in the climax of the story. At that moment, there were a lot of voices trying to be heard and explanations to be had, and I felt like I was right in the crowd myself. It read very naturally and was extremely immersive.

Romance

I liked Daniel and Nora’s relationship with each other, imperfect as it was, but I wouldn’t have minded a touch more of them together outside of the medical clinic.

Final Thoughts

Rating: 5 out of 5.

As a whole, The Girl in His Shadow was a solid historical novel, unique in many ways and therefore quite refreshing – a totally different type of historical fiction read for me! I definitely recommend it (it actually makes my list of top 25 historical fiction novels to read!).

Just keep in mind those detailed medical procedures if you don’t have the stomach for that kind of talk!
